Built in 1822 to defend the Bay of Paraty, the Forte Defensor Perpétuo has a privileged view of the city. The place, on the hill Morro da Vila Velha, housed the first village of Paraty, before the city descended to where the Historic Center is today.
The Fortress protected the city in the midst of Brazil’s independence process. Today the building preserves areas such as the Commander’s House, the wing of the Quartel da Tropa (troop barracks) and the Quartel dos Inferiores (barracks of the Inferiors). The place also houses a small museum with pieces that date back to the history of the city, such as war weapons, caiçara artifacts and pieces that date back to the slave period. The big attraction, however, is the beautiful view and the access to the sea, from where you can enjoy the view of the Bay.
