The surroundings of Paraty keep secrets and a lot of history. A very interesting place to visit there is the village of Paraty-Mirim, with its beach of calm waters and the possibility of bathing in the river passing by. The oldest church in Paraty is on this beach.
Arriving at Paraty Mirim there is a reserve of Guarani Indians, preserved by Funai.
From the beach, boats leave for Saco do Mamanguá, Saco da Velha and islands in the region, among other places to visit.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Paraty-Mirim was an important alternative commercial port to the port of Paraty. In the eighteenth century, it drained the gold coming from Minas Gerais and, in the following century, it was a port for the clandestine landing of slaves for the coffee farms in São Paulo. From the 19th century on, however, the region entered into decadence.
